Visiting the breeder before picking up your puppy

A visit to the breeder before bringing your puppy home is an excellent way to ensure the puppy you choose is happy and healthy. By visiting the breeder, you will also be able to get a sense of the environment and care that the puppy is used to, which can be helpful as you settle into a new routine with them.

A responsible breeder should offer you a chance to meet your puppy usually around the age of 6 or 7 weeks. This will allow you to bond with your puppy before they come home so they find it easier to settle around you.

It will also give you an opportunity to discuss any questions you may have with the breeder so you feel more prepared for the big day.

Puppy proofing your home before collecting your new puppy

Puppies are naturally very curious and love to explore and they can quickly get into trouble! To ensure your puppy has a safe and stress-free introduction to their new home, puppy proofing is a must. Luckily, it’s not as daunting as it sounds – with a bit of planning, you can quickly make your home dachshund proof. But it’s important to remember that puppies are both curious and very determined, so be sure to take precautions in every corner of your home – from the kitchen to the bedroom and even the garden.

List of items you will need for your journey

Your dachshund puppy adventure will start on the day when you collect your puppy from the breeder. Before you leave for the breeder’s, make sure you have all the necessary items you need for your puppy’s journey. These include:

dog car seat, travel crate or dog car belt

your puppy’s harness – it is not safe for your puppy to use a collar to restrain their movement in the car as it can injure their neck if you have an accident so use a harness instead

– blanket – preferably the breeder will give you a blanket that smells of your pup’s mum and their siblings

wee pads, old towel and pet wipes – your puppy may have an accident or be sick during the journey so these may come in handy

– plastic bag for any mess

treats

water bottle or travel bowl

puppy toys

dog lead – in case you need to stop for a potty break on the way

Snuggle Puppy – a soft toy that mimics a real heart beat – this might be helpful if your puppy is feeling very anxious

Knowing that you are prepared for the journey by having all the essentials at hand will make you feel more relaxed, which in turn will make your puppy feel more comfortable.

Write a list of questions to ask the breeder

Next, be sure to write down all the questions you would like to ask the breeder before you leave with the puppy. Here are a few examples for you:

– did my puppy have a vet health check already and when?

– did my puppy have their first vaccination already and when?

– when will my puppy need the next vaccination?

– did my puppy have any flea and worm treatment and when?

– did my puppy have any other treatments?

– is my puppy microchipped?

– what food and brand have you been feeding my puppy?

– how much food does my puppy eat daily?

– what is my puppy’s daily routine?

– what are my puppy’s favourite toys?

– what are my puppy’s favourite treats, if any?

– what is my puppy’s current weight?

If you are getting your puppy from a responsible breeder, you will hopefully know the answer to some of these questions already as they should keep you updated regularly. If not, be prepared to ask these questions and make notes so you can refer to them later on when needed. The breeder should also provide you with all the necessary paperwork and information as described in the next chapter.

What to expect from the breeder when collecting your puppy

You should expect quite a bit of paperwork from your puppy’s breeder and it’s important you read through it together with your breeder before you leave. This will give you an opportunity to clarify any points you are not clear about there and then.

– it’s neccessary to sign and keep a copy of a contract with the breeder including a return/refund policy

– you should also receive:

  • a Kennel Club registration document with instructions on how to change the ownership of your puppy
  • a microchip transfer document with instructions on how to get registered as the keeper of your puppy
  • your puppy’s vaccination record with the details about their first vaccine
  • details about your puppy’s worm treatment
  • your puppy’s health check certificate assuming your puppy was checked by a vet already
  • details of pet insurance the breeder may arrange for you – this is usually a one month free trial
  • details about your puppy’s daily routine including feeding times
  • some breeders may provide you with one pack of your puppy’s kibble with recommendations on how to continue feeding them

– expect to be given a blanket that smells of your puppy’s mum and siblings

– some breeders may also give you a collar and a toy

Just before you leave for home

Last but definitely not least, try taking your puppy for a potty break before you set off or ask your breeder when they went last. This is especially helpful if you have a long journey ahead and would like to plan potty breaks on the way. After that, it’s time to buckle up and head home with your adorable new puppy!
