When the time comes to pick up your doxie puppy from their breeder, it can be an incredibly exciting and somewhat nerve-wracking experience. You are not quite sure what to expect and how your puppy will react to leaving the only home they have known so far. In this diary entry, we will tell you all about our experience bringing our dachshund puppy home. We will also provide you with helpful information on what to expect from the breeder and how to prepare for your journey home.

Bringing Our Dachshund Puppy Home

Picking up our dachshund puppy from her breeder

We arranged to pick up our dachshund puppy from her breeder at 10am on Sunday morning. This was an ideal time for us as we could have a whole day ahead of us bonding with her. We also wanted to ensure that Daisy would get an opportunity to crate train and have a nap in her new crate during the day time before putting her to sleep in it for the night.

We were so super excited when we arrived to the breeder’s and saw Daisy happily running around the garden. She looked so content and comfortable playing with other dogs and puppies, some of which were quite a lot bigger! Although we could barely wait to take her home with us, there were a few formalities we had to take care of with the breeder first.

What to expect from the breeder when collecting your puppy

There was quite a lot to discuss with the breeder, which is why I will be quite detailed here. I am sure you will find all this information helpful so here it comes. 🙂

– we signed a contract with the breeder including a return/refund policy

– we received:

• a Kennel Club registration document with instructions on how to change the ownership of our puppy
• a microchip transfer document with instructions on how to get registered as the keeper of our puppy
• Daisy’s vaccination record with the details about her first vaccine
• details about her worm treatment
• Daisy’s health check certificate as she had her first vet health check at the age of 6 weeks
• details about the free one month’s pet insurance the breeder arranged for us
• details about Daisy’s daily routine including feeding times
• one pack of her kibble with recommendations on how to continue feeding

– and finally we were also given a blanket that smelled of her mum and her siblings together with a collar and a soft toy

Our puppy’s journey home

With paperwork completed, there was just enough time left to trim Daisy’s nails and let her have her potty break before jumping (not literally) in the car. We could tell Daisy was very worried and scared as she was shaking terribly! So we let her sit on our daughter’s lap instead of her car seat during the car journey.

She cried and whined for a while but eventually settled while snuggling in her mum’s blanket. Although still shaking, she made herself comfy and placed her head on the ‘heart beat’ soft toy we bought for her. I must say we were really pleased she found the toy comforting as we were planning on using it for her bedtime.

As we progressed with the journey, we enjoyed watching Daisy starting to bond with our daughter and already giving her kisses. But unfortunately the car journey prooved to be a bit too long for Daisy’s stomach to handle. She vomitted twice before arriving home but otherwise seemed OK. Thankfully we were prepared for this situation and placed a couple of wee pads on our daughter’s lap. With some baby wipes and a plastic bag at hand, we managed to clean up the mess in no time.

Essentials needed when collecting your puppy

You would probably like to know what other essentials are needed when collecting your puppy so here is the full list for you:

• dog car seat, crate or dog car belt
• your puppy’s harness – it is not safe for your puppy to use a collar to restrain their movement in the car as it can injure their neck if you have an accident. Unfortunately the harness we brought with us was too small so we had no choice but to use her collar this time.
• blanket – preferably the breeder will give you a blanket that smells of your pup’s mum and their siblings
• wee pads, old towel and baby wipes – your puppy may have an accident during the journey or be sick just like our Daisy
• plastic bag for any mess
• treats
• water bottle or bowl
• toys
• lead – in case you need to stop for a potty break on the way
• soft toy that mimics a real heart beat – this might be helpful if your puppy is feeling very anxious. Our Daisy definitely found the toy comforting and she is still using it at bedtimes. You can purchase one on Amazon UK or Amazon US.

Arriving home safe and sound

Our journey took about an hour and although Daisy vomitted on the way, she managed the journey without any potty accidents. What a clever girl! 🙂 We were hoping she would eventually fall asleep on the way but that didn’t happen. So you can imagine how exhausted she was after that car drive. Thankfully we had a nice comfy bed ready for her so she could rest a little before exploring her new home!
