As a new puppy parent, you will likely feel an immense sense of anticipation awaiting your puppy’s arrival. Your dachshund puppy will spend the first eight weeks of their life with the breeder before you will be able to pick them up. We got to witness our puppy blossom from a tiny bundle of fur into a loving pup thanks to photos and video updates from her breeder. Watching our puppy grow and learn during the eight week period is something we will never forget. So, let’s tell you all about our dachshund puppy’s first 8 weeks. 🙂
Our Dachshund Puppy’s First 8 Weeks
Birth to three weeks old
Daisy Lou, our miniature choc & tan dapple dachshund was born together with five other siblings, one boy and four girls. We anxiously anticipated her arrival and were really happy to hear both the mum and all six puppies were healthy and safe. We received the first photo of the litter the next day followed by a video when the puppies were four days old. I can’t even describe how excited we all were each time we received a new video update so we could all watch our puppy grow! 🙂
Our puppy’s mum took excellent care of them and the puppies soon turned into little chubsters who just wanted to eat, cuddle and chill out a lot. When the puppies turned about two weeks old, something amazing happened! They opened their eyes for the first time and we could finally see them in their full beauty. They were still so little and vulnerable but already growing so fast.
Three to six weeks old
Our breeder started weaning the puppies off their mum’s milk when they were about three and a half weeks old. Although they were munching away on the food they were given, they still preferred their mummy’s milk to be honest. Their diet included kibble and their mum’s milk until they were a bit older.
As the weeks went by, we watched our puppy grow into a confident little pup full of life. We watched her chilling out with her mum and siblings and she even got to play with other puppies, which was real fun as they got up to lots of mischief together. Little did she know that everything was going to change when she turned six weeks old!

Six to eight weeks old
The day had finally come when we were able to visit Daisy Lou, just six weeks old. We could barely wait to meet her and to hold her in our arms! The puppy meet was an amazing and very relaxing experience for all of us. The puppies’ mum was around to keep an eye on her offsprings so the puppies felt really relaxed and comfortable around us. The visit was a great opportunity for us to start bonding with Daisy Lou but it went by way too fast!
We left full of emotions, both happy but also sad as we knew the puppy’s mum was going to be leaving the puppies shortly after us leaving. 🙁 Thankfully the puppies were used to spending some time without their mum by then so hopefully it wasn’t too much of a shock for them.
The next two weeks went by quite fast…the puppies received their first vaccination when six weeks old and passed their vet health check with flying colours! They were also microchipped at the same time so they had a lot on that day, pour things! And I must not forget the worm treatment…our breeder was excellent and took care of everything for us including one month’s free pet insurance.
When the puppies turned eight weeks old they were ready to be picked up by their new hoomans and move into their new forever homes. But I will tell you all about it in my next Dachshund puppy diary entry so stay tuned! 🙂
