Essentials To Prevent Health Issues

You have probably read about this already but dog ramps and stair gates are absolutely essential if you want to prevent potential health issues in your dachshund.

– dog ramps

– stair gates

Dachshunds’ long, slender spine is vulnerable to intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), which can cause back pain and paralysis. Too much climbing and jumping can put lots of strain on their back which can cause long term health issues. You should be using ramps to help your dachshund get onto and off your furniture such as beds, sofas or into cars when travelling.

We purchased this dog ramp on Amazon UK and are very happy with it so far. It is a very sturdy and well made dog ramp that is just perfect for our mini doxie. It is just the right length so it is not too steep and can be adjusted to different heights. If you are based in US you can find a very similar alternative on Amazon US.

Stair gates not only help to stop your dachshund from climbing up and down the stairs but they are also helpful at limiting the space available to your pup. This way you can keep an eye on them making sure they don’t get into any trouble when out of your sight.

There is a vast variety of stair gates available on the market but we went for this metal stair gate, which is available on both Amazon UK and Amazon US. It was super easy to install and the auto-close feature is perfect if you are new to stair gates and keep forgetting to close them.

Training Supplies

You should start training your puppy as soon as possible on the first day in their new home. Training a dachshund puppy requires lots of patience and consistency. So having all the training supplies ready and at hand will definitely help both you and your puppy make a good start.

– crate

– playpen

– training treats

– treats pouch

– puppy pads / wee pads

– training bells (optional)

– clicker (optional)

– puppy training guide/book

– urine enzyme cleaner

We absolutely love the PawHut Dog Crate that we got from Amazon UK especially because our puppy loves spending time in it. We were after something more stylish with the added benefit of extra storage and this dog crate totally exceeded our expectations. It was very easy to assemble and includes a comfy cushion with a removable and washable cover. One thing we should mention…we didn’t use the legs and placed the crate directly on the floor so our puppy could climb in easily.

We spent some time looking for a similar crate on Amazon US but didn’t come across anything with the storage unit but this Feandrea Dog Crate looks super stylish and has a removable tray, which helps to keep the crate clean.

Feeding Items And Food

It is essential that you provide your dachshund with a balanced healthy diet that is age and breed appropriate because obesity can become an issue for dachshunds.

Slow feeding bowls or lick mats are a must for feeding dachshunds as they tend to eat too fast. This can cause them to choke or vomit after finishing their meal.

When it comes to feeding your dachshund puppy, try to feed them the same food they were given by the breeder for at least the first few days. When your puppy arrives, everything will be new and scary to them so having the same food they are used to will help with reducing their stress level.

– slow feeding bowl

– water bowl

– lick mat

– puppy food

When we were looking to buy a slow feeding bowl set for our dachshund puppy we were quite overwhelmed by the sheer amount of bowls available on the market but then…we came across this Pecute Slow Feeding Mat! We are so happy we bought it in the end because it’s a super practical set with a washable non-spill mat and removable bowls, all dishwasher safe too. This set is available on both Amazon UK and Amazon US so please check it out, it’s definitely worth it!

Walks And Outings

Dachshunds are very energetic and playful dogs that need lots of physical and mental exercise. Miniature sausage dogs will require at least 30 minutes of exercise daily, while standard sausage dogs need at least 60 minutes of exercise daily.

Although your dachshund puppy will not be able to go for a proper walk until they are fully vaccinated, you will still need most of the below items from the first day.

– lead

– harness / collar

– name tag

– poo bags

– water bottle/bowl

– travel food bowl

– clothing

– whistle for recall (optional)

– sling carrier

– dog car seat or travel box/crate

It is quite important to choose a sling carrier that is comfortable for both you and your puppy as you will be carrying them around a lot during the first few months. Again there are so many to choose from but we would just say…go for one with an adjustable strap so all family members (including your children) can take turns carrying your doxie.

This dog sling is ideal as it’s got the adjustable strap we mentioned and is made of soft material so it’s very comfortable to carry. Plus it’s big enough to even fit a blanket for your puppy to snuggle in. Find it on Amazon UK or Amazon US.

Although it is not a legal requirement in all countries (it is in UK) to restrain dogs inside a vehicle, we would still recommend purchasing a car seat, crate or a dog car harness/belt. It will limit your dog’s movement around the car and will prevent them from distructing the driver. We didn’t want to keep our puppy in a crate in the back of the car so we went for this waterproof car seat instead.

We were a bit skeptical to start with as it was one of the cheaper seats without padding but we were not disappointed! It was easy to assemble and fix to the car seat. We just inserted a cushion in it for extra comfort and our doxie is more than happy to snooze in it when on travels. So if you are looking for a low cost option that does what it says on the box then check this car seat on Amazon UK and Amazon US.

Dog Toys And Chews

Dachshunds need plenty of mental stimulation and exercise on daily basis to keep them entertained and out of trouble. We recommend purchasing a selection of different types of toys, puzzles and chews so they have a variety to choose from.

Dachshunds love to chew especially during their teething stage that starts around the age of 12-14 weeks so hardy and chewable toys are essential if you want to protect your personal belongings. Natural chews are also an excellent choice and they will keep your doxie entertained for hours.

Below are a few ideas to choose from:

– rope toys

– soft rubber toys

– squeaky soft toys

– balls

– snuffle mats

– puzzle games

– Kongs

– split antlers

– rabbit ears

– chicken legs

– bull pizzle

As your dachshund puppy grows up, you will find yourself replacing lots and we mean lots of destroyed toys so don’t invest too much money in fancy and expensive toys. Having said that, a good puzzle game is a toy that will last and provide hours of entertainment.

We personally love the Nina Ottosson range of dog toys and puzzles, because they are very sturdy and keep our puppy occupied for ages. They are excellent puzzles made of safe materials that are easy to clean and they do last a long time too. You can choose from 4 different difficulty levels to suit the age of your pup. Explore the full range on Amazon UK or Amazon US.

Grooming Tools And Products

Depending on what type of coat your sausage dog has you may need to spend minimum to moderate amount of time on grooming. You will need to brush their coat regularly but try to avoid giving them a bath too often as this can be bad for their coat and skin.

Dental care is essential and you should aim to clean your puppy’s teeth a few times a week either by using their toothpaste and toothbrush or by giving them natural teeth cleaning chews.

Nail clipping and ear cleaning can be a bit daunting for new puppy parents so we would recommend you start by taking your puppy to a vet or groomer first to learn from them.

– brush

– nail clippers

– natural shampoo

– natural conditioner (optional)

– ear cleaning wipes

– cotton wool for eye cleaning

– natural dog toothpaste

– tooth brush

– natural paw balm (optional)

When it comes to dog grooming and care, you will notice there are hundreds of different products to choose from but if possible, purchase all natural products as they are healthier for your puppy. We absolutely love the Dogslife range because their products are 100% natural, smell great and more importantly…our puppy likes them! You can browse through there products on Amazon UK or Amazon US.

Other Items For Home

Last but certainly not least, dachshunds love to snuggle in with a blanket on a comfortable bed so these two items your sausage dog can’t do without! Consider getting more than one bed if you have multiple floors in your house and you will definitely need several blankets. 🙂

– dog beds

– blankets

– snuggle sack

We would highly recommend purchasing a snuggle sack or a hooded dog bed with the blanket attached to it. They are super comfy and the blanket never slips off regardless of how much your doxie moves around inside. These are especially helpful if your puppy wakes up crying at night because their blanket came off.

This hooded dog bed is one of our favourites because the blanket is attached with a zipper which means you can remove it during hot summer days. Check it out on Amazon UK or Amazon US.
